Dover, NH
Located in Strafford County, Dover is situated in the center of the Seacoast region of New Hampshire. It is located between the Cochecho and Bellamy Rivers and lies entirely within the Piscatuqua River watershed. Neighboring towns include Rochester to the north, Somersworth to the northeast, Barrington to the northwest, Rollinsford to the east and Madbury to the west. Dover is less than an hour from Concord, New Hampshire’s state capital, and about an hour from Portland, Maine and Boston, Massachusetts. Dover’s location is convenient to lakes and beaches in both New Hampshire and Maine.
Dover is New Hampshire’s oldest permanent settlement, and the 7th oldest in the country. One of the colony's four original townships, it had once included Durham, Lee, Madbury and Newington. It includes 26.7 square miles of land, and 2.3 square miles of water.
There are many schools located in Dover. Approximately 3,600 students attend school in the Dover School District. Saint Mary Academy is located in downtown Dover, St. Thomas Aquainas High School is located on Dover Point, and Portsmouth Christian Academy and McIntosh College are located in Dover.
Dover is home to the historic house museum, the Woodman Institute Museum, the Children's Museum of New Hampshire and the Wentworth-Douglass Hospital.
As of the 2000 census, Dover is home to 26,884 residents, 11,573 households, 6,492 families and 11,924 homes.
